The Los Angeles Kings announced they have signed defenseman Alex Roach to a three-year entry-level contract Monday.

The six-foot-four defenseman was a free agent invite to Kings training camp.

Roach was then returned to the Calgary Hitmen, his junior club. He is entering his second season in the Western Hockey League. Last season he recorded 16 points and 77 penalty minutes in 61 games.

Signing a free agent from Calgary’s WHL club isn’t new to Lombardi, who inked goaltender Martin Jones after a training camp tryout in 2008. The Kings also selected former Hitmen forward Brandon Kozun in the sixth round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.
