A small but highly-skilled forward. A beautiful skater with good jump, top speed and darting agility. Can create offense using his speed, aggressiveness and offensive sense. Shows nice vision and can play the role of playmaker or finisher equally well. Has a nice release on a quick wrister and the drive to go to the net. Has good character and will do what is needed to win. Is feisty and will dive right into puck battles all over the ice. Because of his lack of size, Smith has a problem with bigger stronger defenders and will need to add weight and strength to his slight frame. Has a good head on his shoulders, possessing good hockey sense and a strong work ethic. Was awarded the Doc Seaman Memorial Trophy as the WHL Scholastic player of the year. (May 2011)
