The first round of cuts from Canada’s National Junior Team Selection Camp come in less than six hours. Seven or eight unhappy players will be woken up at 6 a.m. to the news that they will be returned to their junior team, killing their dream of pulling on the maple leaf.

The Winnipeg Jets have selected Mark Scheifele of the Barrie Colts with the seventh overall pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. Much like Mark McNeill, Scheifele is a centre that can contribute in all three zones on the ice. Where Shceifele excels is with his long, powerful skating stride which compliments his six-foot-two, 185-pound frame.

Hail Nail. Nail Yakupov was awarded the Emms Family Award as the OHL’s top rookie Wednesday, capping off an impressive debut season in which the Sarnia Sting standout recorded 49 goals and 101 points in 65 games this season and be named the league’s rookie of the month on three separate occasions.
