New York Islanders have signed Ryan Strome before Tuesday’s deadline, ensuring their top pick from 2011 will start his season in the NHL.

The Islanders and Strome, selected fifth overall in June’s NHL Entry Draft, had until 5 PM to get the deal done or force New York to return him to the Niagara IceDogs of the Ontario Hockey League.

The six-foot-one, 183-pound Strome failed to record a point in the preseason. In 65 games last season, the 18-year-old had 33 goals and 106 points in 65 games.

Strome can still be returned to Niagara at any point during the season. After he plays in his 10th game, the first year of Strome’s contract is engaged, bringing him one year closer to restricted free agency. Should he play 40 games, it will move Strome one year closer to restricted free agency.
