The Edmonton Oilers have selected Red Deer Rebels first overall to kickstart the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

This marks the second consecutive year the Oilers have drafted first, selecting Taylor Hall with the opening pick in 2010.

Nugent-Hopkins possesses advanced skating and can generate speed with his quick feet in just a few explosive strides. The Burnaby, BC. native has ultra soft hands that are just a part of his game-breaking arsenal. He can take the puck to the net or with his quick release, wire a shot from the outside or draw a defender to him before dishing a seeing-eye pass to an open teammate.

Often criticized for his lack of goal scoring, the Rebel silenced critics by scoring 17 goals in his final 20 games.

The 2010 WHL rookie of the year is also competent in his own end, able to strip opponents of the puck and provide pressure on the back check.

The slight on Nugent-Hopkins lies in his frame, but there’s nothing to suggest he cannot play at 195 pounds at the NHL with his Gretzky-esque ability to avoid hits.
