Suspended Michigan defenseman Jon Merrill is eligible to return to Red Berenson’s practice. But he hasn’t been found there.

Suspended 12 games by the school for a violation of team rules, was afforded the opportunity to return to the club in a practice setting and is nearing his November 11th return to the team. He hasn’t taken it.

Instead, Merrill, selected by the New Jersey Devils in the second round, 38th overall in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, has been spotted around the Compuware Arena in Plymouth – the home of the Ontario Hockey League’s Whalers.

Merrill was seen attending a Whalers game, fueling speculation the Brighton, MI. native is set to leave school in favor of major junior.

Merrill was originally selected by the Whalers in the third round, 49th overall in the 2008 OHL Priority draft.
