Expectations coming into his draft year were enormous for Nathan MacKinnon, but the prize of the 2013 NHL Draft has done nothing but exceed them.

The Halifax Moosehead winger was named one of the QMJHL’s TELUS three stars of the week Monday following a massive four-goal, six-point performance. MacKinnon was instrumental in the Mooseheads emerging victorious in all three games they played this week. Halifax is currently riding a 10-game win streak and sit atop the QMJHL with a 12-1-0 record.

MacKinnon himself is also riding a streak of sorts, having collected at least a goal in his past seven games and running his total to 15 tallies on the year. MacKinnon’s 24 points rank fourth in the league

Scouting director Dan Stewart said it’s no surprise that MacKinnon, Future Considerations’ top-ranked prospect for the 2013 NHL Draft, is off to such a torrid start.

“Nathan has the 2013 drafts quickest hands/feet combination along with the ability to make difficult plays at top speed,” he said. “He makes those around him that much better because of his elite level of skill, intelligence and vision.

MacKinnon wasn’t the only 2013 NHL Draft eligible to be honoured by the QMJHL.

Rimouski Oceanic goaltender Philippe Desrosiers was named the league’s third star after posting a goal-against-average of 2.15 with a .935 save percentage this week, including his first career shutout.
