Olli Maatta has been Knighted. The Finnish defenseman was the first overall pick in the CHL Import Draft by the London Knights.

Two days prior to the Import Draft, the Knights dealt Reid McNeill, their first round Import Draft pick, Mississauga’s 2nd round pick in the 2013 OHL Priority Draft and their own 3rd in 2013 to the Barrie Colts in exchange for the first overall selection in Wednesday’s selection process, using it to select the Jyvaskyla blueliner who is eligible for the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.

Maatta had four points in six games at the World Under-18 Championship in Germany and also competed for Finland at the World Junior Championship in Buffalo, becoming the youngest Finn to ever represent his country at the event.

Maatta is currently ranked 26th overall in Future Considerations’ preliminary ranking for the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.

The six-foot-two, 190-pound defenseman is described as a physical, shut down defender with nice defensive instincts and the ability to make a good outlet by Future Considerations scouting director Dan Stewart.
