Jonathan Huberdeau has been drafted fifth overall, just not in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft and not in Minnesota.

Russian club Vityaz Chekhov made the Saint John Sea Dogs standout the fifth pick in the KHL Junior Draft Saturday.

The pick shouldn’t discourage any NHL clubs from taking the St Jerome, PQ native. Huberdeau doesn’t expect to report to Russia anytime soon.

“I don’t know why they drafted me,” Huberdeau told The National Post. “For sure, I don’t want to go there. I didn’t talk to anybody about that.”

Huberdeau is ranked second overall for the NHL version of the draft by Future Considerations. Gabriel Landeskog, ranked fifth overall by FC, was drafted 16th overall.

The draft also saw Kitchener Rangers defenseman Ryan Murphy and Niagara IceDogs centre Ryan Strome drafted in the fifth round, while Drummondville Voltigeurs forward Sean Couturier selected in the sixth round by Salavat Yulaev Ufa.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, projected to go first overall by Future Considerations, went undrafted. Matt Dumba, a teammate of Nugent-Hopkins who isn’t eligible for the NHL draft until 2012, was taken 60th.

Anton Slepyshev, selected by Metallurg Novokuznetsk, was the top pick of the draft.
