Coach Don Hay didn’t have to make his first cut as hopefuls for Canada’s junior team arrived in Calgary Saturday.

Mononucleosis did it for him.

Ryan Spooner was diagnosed with the illness by the Kingston Frontenacs, eliminating him for a potential roster spot for Canada at the World Junior Championship. Spooner has 14 goals and 32 points in 27 games with Kingston this season.

Canada’s camp roster now sits at 42, including four goaltenders, 14 defensemen and 24 forwards.

On-ice sessions get underway Sunday, with cuts coming as soon as Monday night.
