For Sven Bartschi, the draft excitement quickly turned into contract talk.

Just a day after being drafted 13th overall by the Calgary Flames, Bartschi was offered a three-year, entry level contract with potential earnings of $1.45 million. He signed.

Before the ink could dry on Bartschi’s contract, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins came to a contract agreement with the Edmonton Oilers, the standard three-year deal that will see the first overall pick earn upwards of $3.75 million.

Last week both Adam Larsson, selected fourth overall by the New Jersey Devils, and Mika Zibanejad, the sixth overall pick of the Ottawa Senators, both signed deals with their respective clubs. Larsson received the rookie maximum but his contract includes no individual performance bonuses.

A third Swede, Jonas Brodin signed with the draft host Minnesota Wild with a cap hit of $1.475 million.

Zibanejad’s signing doesn’t guarantee his presence in North America next season.

According to a report from Aftonbladet, Zibanejad will either play with the Senators this season or head back overseas to skate with Djurgården of the Swedish Elite League. In other words, Zibanejad will not play in the AHL next season.

The same idea is expected for Larsson, who prior to the draft expressed his desire to stay in Sweden for another year. That talk has since subsided, and Larsson will be a Devil this season.

Larsson could be the last European player to sign this offseason.

NHL clubs had until 5 pm Friday to sign Europeans in order for them to be eligible to play in the upcoming season. Teams can extend the deadline to August 15 by paying the player’s club team a fee.
