Pair of Sea Dogs returned to Saint John

Tomas Jurco will get the opportunity to defend his Memorial Cup.

The Saint John Sea Dogs standout was returned to junior by the Detroit Red Wings Friday night.

Jurco, Detroit’s first pick, 35th overall in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, had 31 goals and 56 points in 60 games with the Sea Dogs. In Saint John’s march to the QMJHL title, Jurco had six goals and 18 points. He added four goals and five points in helping the QMJHL club capture the Memorial Cup.

The Kosice, Slovakia native also represented his country at the 2011 World Junior Championship in Buffalo, scoring one goal in six games.

Jurco will be reunited with teammate Zack Phillips.

The Fredericton, NB. native was returned to the Sea Dogs Friday night by the Minnesota Wild. The Wild originally selected Phillips 28th overall in 2011. He scored 38 goals and 95 points in 67 games with Saint John last season.

Jonathan Huberdeau, selected third overall by the Florida Panthers, remains in camp.
