There’s a lot to look forward to if your team isn’t among the 16 competing for Lord Stanley’s Cup.

For the first time in league history, the NHL Draft Lottery will give 14 teams the opportunity to pick first. Under the previous system, only the five teams with the fewest points (or those that held the rights to said draft pick) had the opportunity to win the first overall selection. Previously, the winner of the lottery could move up a maximum of four spots.

Held on Monday, April 29th, the lottery will use a weighted system to determine the order of the draft’s first 14 picks based on the position in the standings in which a team finished. Fourteen balls numbered 1 to 14 will be placed into a machine, which will expel four balls. That four-digit series is matched up to a probability chart that divides the combinations among the 14 non-playoff teams.

The odds of each team winning the right to the first pick is as follows:

1st: 25.0%
2nd: 18.8%
3rd: 14.2%
4th: 10.7%
5th: 8.1%
6th: 6.2%
7th: 4.7%
8th: 3.6%
9th: 2.7%
10th: 2.1%
11th: 1.5%
12th: 1.1%
13th: 0.8%
14th: 0.5%

No club will move down more than one position as a result of the Draft Lottery. The remaining first-round drafting positions are determined by the results of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The order in which teams will select in the 2013 NHL Draft is as follows:
