Vaakanainen leads Finland into Hlinka

Defenseman Urho Vaakanainen is among the 22 players that will represent Finland at the 2016 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup.

The tournament will take place in Breclav, Czech Republic and Bratislava, Slovakia, from Aug. 8-13.

Vaakainen, eighth in Future Considerations’ preliminary ranking for the 2017 NHL Draft, had 11 assists and 13 points in 18 games with the Blues U20 club in Jr. A SM-liiga, and six points in 25 games with the Blues in Liiga.

Vaakanainen also represented Finland at both the 2016 World Under-17’s and the World Under-18’s.

He was selected 41st overall by the Windsor Spitfires in the 2016 CHL Import Draft last month.
