Chychrun named to Canada WJC camp

Defenseman Jakob Chychrun was among the 30 players invited to Hockey Canada’s National Junior Team Sport Chek Selection Camp on Tuesday.

The camp will run Dec. 10-14 in Toronto, On. The tournament, held in Helsinki, Finland kicks off Dec. 26. Exhibition games begin on Dec. 10 and run through Dec. 24. Two of those exhibition games will be held in Toronto (Dec. 12, Dec. 13) with Canada squaring off against the CIS All-Stars squad.

Forwards Julien Gauthier and Pierre-Luc Dubois were also named to the camp.

The trio are the only members of the 2016 NHL Draft class invited to the event.

Chychrun, 17, has four goals and 16 points in 25 games for the Sarnia Sting of the Ontario Hockey League this season, and has previously competed at the World Under-17 Challenge. He is Canada’s highest-ranked prospect in Future Considerations’ November ranking for the 2016 NHL Draft.

Gauthier, ranked sixth, has 23 goals and 30 points in 28 games for the Val-D’or Foreurs. Like Chychrun, the 18-year-old Gauthier has competed at the World Under-17 Challenge.

Dubois has 19 goals and 43 points in 30 games with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. He’s seventh in Future Considerations’ November ranking, and won gold with Canada at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial in August.

The 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship will be hosted in Helsinki, Finland. It begins on December 26, 2015, and will end with the gold medal game on January 5, 2016.
