Spencer is a smooth skating defender who pivots well and can generate power with his stride
as he digs in. Very good use of his edges and can cut deep to change directions fairly quickly.
Strong backwards skater who gets low and can control the moves of the attacker with the space
he provides. Spencer will hop up into the rush to provide a passing option, though this is not
something he revolves his game around. Good offensive instincts and awareness to know when
the best opportunity to do so is. Has a cannon of a shot as he transfers all of his weight into it.
Makes a good first pass to kick-start the rush, but it is his decision making under pressure and
in transition that stands out; Spencer can be pressured and still be able to make a quick D to
D pass or pass up the wall with impressive confidence and poise. His passes are crisp, on the
tape and lead his man on the rush. Called on to kill penalties and maintains strong positioning,
covering his area and pressuring the puck carrier. Knows his responsibilities in the defensive
zone and is not someone who will see a lot of the bench in a tight game. He pushes his man to
the outside and will hold him on the wall with his frame to limit the space the man has to work
him. Spencer can contain the most elusive of players very well. Steps up and will lay the body
when the opportunity is there as well as physically battling with opponents.  (May 2015)
