The diminutive and offensive oriented defender is great at starting the transition or rush from his own zone. Karlsson often carries the puck right into the offensive zone before being forced to make a play. He sees the ice very well and has great offensive instincts. He can deliver a pass through traffic and also take the puck to the net if the opportunity presents itself. He skates well enough but lacks top end speed although he does have good side-to-side mobility. He has natural instincts and offensive ability that can not be taught. Physically, Karlsson is feisty and will battle in the corners and often scrum it up. Through his offensive abilities and vision he makes those around him better. (May 2008)
