It’ll be a lonely June 24th for John Gibson if Twitter is right.

The Twitterverse overwhelmingly suggested that the US NTDP’s standout netminder shouldn’t be drafted among the top-30 in Minnesota, pushing the Pittsburgh, PA. native to day two of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

Despite putting up a 2.38 goals against average and .926 save percentage in 17 USHL games and helping Team USA to a gold medal at the World Under-18 Championship in Germany, Gibson, the top-ranked goaltender by Future Considerations heading into the draft, should be avoided in the first round.

“I think the new NHL is something like the old NHL in that teams will look for goalies in the later rounds,” tweeted @lazyboyy.

“He’ll be taken in the second round,” @GGpx followed up. “Teams are starting to think twice about picking a goalie early in the draft.”

Only two goaltenders were selected in the first round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. Jack Campbell, also of the NTDP, and Mark Visentin were the only netminders among the first 30 picks a year ago. Calvin Pickard, Kent Simpson and Scott Wedgewood were the only three goaltenders taken in the following two rounds in 2010.

The last time a goaltender wasn’t taken in the first round was in 2009. The New York Islanders made Mikko Koskinen the first goaltender taken with the 31st overall pick.

Will the same fate fall on Gibson?

June 24th will tell.
