Makar, Mitchell named to Canada-West for WJAC

Cale Makar will get a shot at a second straight gold.

Makar and fellow NHL Draft eligible defenseman Ian Mitchell will represent Canada West at the 2016 World Junior A Challenge.

The World Junior A Challenge will run Dec. 11-17 in Bonnyville, AB.

Makar, 48th in Future Considerations’ Fall ranking for the 2017 NHL Draft, had one goal in four games at the tournament in 2015 and was named to the tournament’s all-star team in helping Canada West to gold in 2015.

He has 11 goals and 38 points in 28 games with the Brooks Bandits of the American Hockey League this season, and is committed to UMass (Amherst) next year.

Mitchell, ranked 41st, has four goals and 15 points in 31 games wit the Spruce Grove Saints. He had two goals and five points in six games to help Canada White to gold at the 2015 IIHF World Under-17 Challenge. Mitchell is committed to the University of Denver next season.

Griffin Mendel of the Penticton Vees of the British Columbia Hockey League was also named to the team. Mendel, eligible for the 2017 draft, has four assists in 30 games this season.
