Max Gardiner is a collegiate no more. The St. Louis Blues prospect has parted ways with the University of Minnesota.

Gardner, selected in the third round, 74th overall of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, had just one goal and three points in 17 games with the University of Minnesota in a limited role last season.

“We had a good conversation and he was disappointed in the ice time he received last year and was concerned about playing time in the upcoming season,” Minnesota head coach Don Lucia said in a statement released on the club’s website. “Leaving assures him of the ice time he is looking for. I am disappointed he is leaving, but I understand his decision and wish him all the best.”

It is expected that Gardiner will join the Tri City Americans, who listed him in 2009.

He could be joined by a potential Blues teammate.

Fellow St. Louis prospect Jaden Schwartz could be leaving Colorado College for Tri City. The Americans drafted Schwartz in the 8th round, 173rd overall in the 2007 WHL Bantam Draft. He was selected in the first round, 14th overall in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

“If I had a perfect wish list I’d have Jaden Schwartz and Max Gardiner on the same line,” Americans general manager Bob Tory told The Pipeline Show.
