The Calgary Flames have selected Sven Bartschi of the Portland Winterhawks 13th overall in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

Simply put, Bartschi lacks an off-switch. The dynamic offensive forward blends his non-stop motor with a high compete level which makes him an attractive prospect.

Despite playing on a high-powered Portland Winterhawks squad, Bartschi quickly established himself as a primary offensive threat on a team that boasts New York Islanders prospect Nino Niederreiter (taken fifth overall in 2010) and Ryan Johansen of the Columbus Blue Jackets, a fourth overall pick a year ago.

Bartschi is a speedy winger who is agile and in possession of quick acceleration. He can shoot the puck but isn’t shy to distribute the puck to an open teammate, which his 34 goals and 85 points in 66 games can attest to.

Still, teams want to see more from the five-foot-10 forward. He is physically weak when playing up against some of the WHL’s stronger defensemen and can shy away from contact, eliminating his creativity when coming through the middle of the ice.

What teams will like is his performance in the WHL playoffs, though. Bartschi was dominant offensively in the 2010 WHL playoffs, a run that eventually fell short of a championship.
