Tolvanen named to Finland’s prelim World Junior roster

Forward Eeli Tolvanen of the Sioux City Musketeers, eligible for the 2017 NHL Draft, is among the 28 players named to Finland’s preliminary roster for the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship.

The World Juniors will run Dec. 26, 2016 through Jan. 5, 2017, in Toronto and Montreal.

Tolvanen, ninth in Future Considerations’ Fall ranking for the 2017 draft, has 14 goals and 24 points in 21 games for the Sioux City Musketeers of the United States Hockey League this season. He also had seven goals and nine points in seven games at the 2016 IIHF World Under-18 Championship in April where Finland won gold.

Also named to the preliminary roster is forward Kristian Vesalainen and defensemen Robin Salo, Urho Vaakanainen and Juuso Välimäki.

Vesalainen, ranked 11th, is pointless in seven games after being loaned to HPK in Liiga. He had one goal and five points in 16 games with Frolunda of the SHL prior to the loan. He had two goals and six points in seven games at the 2016 World Under-18’s. Välimäki, who captained Finland’s Under-18, has 11 goals and 32 points in 30 games for the Tri-City Americans of the Western Hockey League. He is ranked 22nd.

Salo, ranked 13th, has one goal and seven points in 23 games with Sport of Liiga. He had one assist in seven games as an assistant captain with Finland’s World Under-18 entry. Vaakanainen, ranked 19th, has two goals and three points in 20 games with HYP of Liiga, and had two goals and three points at the World Under-18’s in April.
